At the age of four, Lucy emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada with her parents. She learned the love of needlework from her mother. At an early age the skills of knitting, crocheting and sewing became a source of enjoyment. To this day, a love of these skills and the pleasure of the creative process give her a lot of joy and satisfaction.
She has had a varied career. Starting as a medical technologist, she eventually left the lab for a career in medical laboratory sales during which time she traveled across Canada from Corner Brook to Victoria. Her last position was as Ontario Diagnostic Sales Manager for a large medical diagnostic firm.
Since sewing was always her first love, she left the grueling pace of being on the road and attended courses at the Professional Drapery Workroom School in Asheville, North Carolina. In 1997 she opened Lucy’s Fabric Art, her professional window treatments and soft furnishing design company. Excellence, quality of work and customer satisfaction, has always been her top priority.
Drapery work is very heavy and eventually, due to upper body injuries that would not heal she had to consider a change. With thirty-five years of dressmaking experience (as well as the drapery experience), she attended the professional bra makers course offered by Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. Since graduating from this program Lucy has gone on and become a certified bra making instructor as well as a Victorian corset making instructor. She currently teaches classes at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, as well as from her home-based studio. Lucy will travel to other communities to teach specialized programs. She lectures to women’s groups and at trade shows on the importance to breast health of wearing a properly fitted, supportive bra.
Her love of sewing, background and life experience have led her to this wonderful rewarding new career. The contact that she has with her clients and the help that she is able to provide makes her feel truly blessed. The ideal career is to take your hobby and turn it into your business. This dream has become a reality for Lucy!
